Who We Are Series

What is felt by one, is felt by the other
What is done to one, is done to the other
What we do to others is done to us
People, woman and man
Together as one

Who we are.
Who are we?
Why are we doing these things?
Are we falling backward into fear of the “other”?
Will hope germinate?
What can nature teach us?

These questions run through my creative expression. In our time of chaos, greed and vindictiveness, with a monster virus bringing us to heel, I’m angry, scared and anxious. I reflect on what my children will inherit, the generations and what it means to all of us.

I consider barriers and boundaries, political and social norms in searching for resolution to these questions.

Setting limitations with the spike form, black clay and the human figure sketched in a single hot color sharpens focus on the beauty and symbolism that each brings to the table.

The blocky forms speak of both physical and mental constructions and the spike form is shorthand for power, patriarchy, tools and the culture we have built. The beauty they create together reflects my hope and gratefulness for the light shone by those who are the best of us.
